Victorian Essential Learning Standards – Levels 4

Teacher notes

Introduction RSPCA, Roles & Responsibilities is a program that encourages students to develop a deeper understanding of the needs of animals. Students will become aware of the im-plications and responsibilities required as community members in caring for animals and how the RSPCA can play a part in this. They will be challenged to think about animal welfare issues through discussions on current RSPCA campaigns and individual case studies. The students will gain a greater understanding of the role of the RSPCA in their community and how they can become involved if they wish to. Students will explore issues relating to the RSPCA, not only as a community organisation, but also as a charity.

  • Discuss our responsibilities towards animals as community members.
  • Discuss animal case studies focusing on the needs of animals, responsibilities required in caring for animals and how the RSPCA can play a part in this.
  • Investigate animal welfare issues through discussions on current RSPCA campaigns.
  • Engage in hands on learning. Key questions
  • What role does the RSPCA play in our society as a community organisation and a charity?
  • How does the RSPCA help lost, stray, sick, unwanted and neglected animals?
  • What responsibilities do we have towards animals as community members?
  • How are community members able to get involved in supporting the RSPCA?
  • What are the main needs of animals and responsibilities required in caring for them?
  • What are some of the animal welfare campaigns the RSPCA is involved with, and what is the RSPCA trying to achieve through these campaigns?

Links to VELS

The Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) describe what is essential for all students to achieve.

One of the fundamental skills successful learners must develop is to reflect on learn-ing to link new knowledge to existing knowledge; to establish what is true and accu-rate, important and useful; and to challenge what is untrue and inaccurate.

RSPCA, Roles & Responsibilities aims to address all three core strands of VELS. Facets of the suggested pre-visit activities, the excursion to the RSPCA and post-visit activities are linked to the Strands, Domains, Dimensions and Standards for Level 4 (see full document in downloaded resource pdf).
